About traveling to Memphis, what is the best part of town to stay in

Traveling to Memphis, what is the best part of town to stay in?
I am tentatively planning a trip to Memphis and was wondering what is the best part of town to try and get my hotel in? Is there a part of town that I definitely should NOT stay in? On expedia.com it divides all the hotels into areas: Downtown Memphis, Collierville, Cordova, East Memphis, West Memphis, Arkansas, Memphis International Airport, and Southaven. Which one of this areas should I shoot for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if there is anything else I need to know please feel free to let me know. Thanks so much!

If you're driving Downtown Memphis is not so great for parking but you are close to the tourist sights of Memphis. Collierville is a suburb that is a bit far from everything. Cordova is a sub too but close to the interstate and has lots of chain stores and shops. West Memphis is Arkansas and Southaven is Mississippi, both are far off from doing stuff in Memphis. I would avoid the airport area, not a great part of town.
